Dreamcards is a roguelike deckbuilder that takes place inside the strange world of dreams. You play as Self, a troubled and introspective character who is haunted each night by a nightmare representing their repressed trauma. During the day, you interact with different people and collect cards connected to them, gradually building a deck that reflects your relationships and memories. At night, those cards come to life in a surreal battle against the monster, while the story slowly reveals the darker memories hidden behind each character.
Deckbuilding happens both before and during each run, giving you plenty of room to shape your strategy. There are more than 100 unique cards divided across six different strategies, which can be mixed together to create different combinations. During battles, you use action cards to generate Imagination points, then spend them during the buying phase to add useful cards and resources to your deck. You need to build up enough Consciousness to reach a lucid dream state and defeat the nightmare across seven nights, with a single failed night potentially ending the run. Dreamcards combines deckbuilding, resource management, surreal storytelling, and psychological themes into a distinctive card game where your choices during the day directly affect what happens in your dreams.
